Born in Tāmaki Makaurau, we began as a small group of New Zealanders with a shared passion: to share the rich, living culture of our country in a way that’s authentic, respectful and meaningful. We believed there was a need for genuine Māori-led experiences, tours that don’t just show visitors beautiful places, but also give back to local communities and bring Indigenous people together. Our goal is to invite people from all over the world to experience Māori culture, to understand how important it is to us as tangata whenua, and for locals to reconnect with their heritage. We’re committed to hosting tours that honour our whenua (land), uphold our tikanga (customs), support Māori artisans and performers, and leave visitors having engaged, learned, and part of our story.
What We Offer
At Tūhono Exchange, we provide immersive and authentic Māori cultural experiences designed for both visitors and locals. Here’s what we offer:
Guided Cultural Tours
Visits to marae, heritage trails, museums and cultural centres to explore Māori history, language, art, carving, weaving, song (waiata) & dance (haka, poi).
Performances & Storytelling
Live Māori performances such as haka, waiata and poi; elders and knowledgeable hosts share stories (pūrākau) of ancestors, legends and tikanga.
Hands-On Workshops
Interactive sessions where you can try traditional Māori crafts, musical instruments, games, weaving or carving, and learn basic te reo Māori phrases.
Authentic Dining / Kai (Food Experiences)
Meals that include traditional Māori food / fusion dishes; possible hāngī or kai prepared with local ingredients, providing both taste and cultural experience.
Cultural Immersion
Welcoming rituals (pōwhiri), learning about Māori values such as manaakitanga (hospitality), kaitiakitanga (guardianship of the land), connection with whenua (land) and moana (sea).
Supporting Local Māori Communities
Every tour aims to give back: supporting Māori artisans, performers, marae, and small businesses; ensuring that tourism has positive, lasting impact.
Multimedia & Visual Art
Visits to galleries, exhibitions, Māori public art and landmarks; exposure to both traditional and contemporary Māori artistic expressions.
